Meghalaya unveiled its mesmerizing beauty during our three-day visit. Our journey began with a drive from Kaziranga, making our first stop at Umiam Lake. The serene lake setting was enhanced by an unexpected treat - a two-person band whose incredible vocals echoed across the pristine waters. As daylight waned, we made our way to Cherrapunji for our overnight stay. We had a brief stopover at the Elephant falls, a three tiered fall just outside Shillong.
The following day brought us face-to-face with the magnificent Seven Sisters waterfalls. Though May isn't the peak season for water flow, the panoramic view of the ecosystem was breathtaking. Our exploration continued to the Mawsmai Cave, a remarkable natural formation, though personal limitations prevented a complete traverse. The day's waterfall tour included the picturesque Wah Kaba falls, accompanied by stunning vistas along our route.
Mawlynnong offered us the extraordinary experience of witnessing the Living Roots Bridge, complemented by a charming waterfall. We also visited Asia's cleanest village, where we enjoyed a local lunch. A unique attraction called Sky Point provided an adventurous climb up a bamboo ladder, reaching heights of 30-40 feet, offering clear views of the Bangladesh border.
The journey to Dawki revealed more natural wonders, including impressive waterfalls and views of the Bangladesh border fence. The highlight was a boat ride on the Umngot River, which flows into Bangladesh. The crystal-clear waters, despite their green tinge from the surrounding forest, and perfectly rounded riverside pebbles create an enchanting setting. This peaceful river excursion, complete with refreshment breaks, is an absolute must-do experience.
Our final day presented the stunning Krang Suri falls, with its emerald waters creating a spectacular sight even from a distance. While time constraints prevented us from attempting the 3-4 hour trek to Phibip Falls, it remains a recommended adventure for those with more flexible schedules.
The trip concluded with visits to the Nartiang Monoliths, India's answer to Stonehenge, where Menhirs and Dolmens stand as ancient tributes to kings and queens. The standing monoliths or menhirs are dedicated to the male ancestors while the flat ones, the dolmens, are dedicated to the women. We were on our way to the Laitlum Canyon but rains and mist forced us to abandon our plans.
Our final evening in Shillong was spent at the ECE hotel's Evening Club, where we were treated to exceptional karaoke performances. This remarkable journey through Meghalaya truly defies capture in mere pictures or videos - it's an experience that must be lived to be fully appreciated.
A note of thanks to Clara tours for the arrangements.
