We recently stayed at a lovely live-in cottage-style homestay near Nagao Beach, and it turned out to be exactly the kind of quick break you want when the city starts feeling too loud.
The property is actually a set of three cottages, and together they can host up to 12 people. Each cottage is set up comfortably with a bedroom upstairs and a living room downstairs that can also be used as an additional sleeping space for two. It’s simple, practical, and made for groups—friends or families who want to hang out together without feeling cramped.
One big plus: the location. It’s about a 10-minute walk to Nagao Beach, close enough for an easy morning or evening stroll, but far enough to feel calm and tucked away.
If you’re coming from Bombay, the easiest route is via the M2M ferry. People from the island city, South Bombay, or Bandra can take the coastal route to the Ferry wharf. The ferry typically costs around 400 per passenger, and roughly 1,200 extra for a medium-sized car. after a one hour sea journey, you land at Mandwa Jetty, and from there the drive is about 1 hour 15 minutes.
A quick travel tip, because this matters: there’s road construction around the area, so choose your route carefully. It’s best to skirt the main town roads and head towards Nagao Beach. If Google Maps tries to take you via Hiranandani and nearby routes because it looks shorter, avoid it. That stretch can get bumpy, is not fully finished, and it even cuts through a gated estate and a school area—basically, it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Stick to the Nagao Beach approach for a smoother ride. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/Y3qMaz7qAUMJ3XwJ6)
Once you’re at the property, there’s enough to keep everyone busy without needing to plan too much. There’s a small pool, and tiny lawns where you can squeeze in a bit of cricket or football. It’s not a massive resort-style setup, but it’s perfect for relaxed group time.
The real standout of the stay, though, was the caretaker. He cooks food that honestly feels like you can’t get it anywhere else—not because it’s fancy, but because it tastes like proper home-cooked meals. Every meal felt like a mini food festival: biryani, chole bhature, kheer, and more. You pay for the raw materials, the portions are generous, and the overall experience is worth it just for the meals alone.
Nagao Beach itself is an easy outing. It has some water sports, and the water is quite shallow, which makes it feel more relaxed. One thing to note: the sand is more black than golden, so if you’re expecting that classic golden-beach vibe, it may not be your favorite. But for a casual beach visit, it works well. We spooted a red whiskered bulbul and there is enough birds in the vicinity.

In terms of how long to stay, I’d say two to three days is ideal. The travel time is roughly three and a half to four hours depending on your route and ferry timing, so a one-day trip can feel rushed. Two nights gives you enough time to actually unwind.
If you’re going as a group, it helps to carry a few card games. There were some games available (like Sequence), but bringing your own is always a good idea. The whole place is made for slow evenings—food, conversations, and simple fun.
Weather-wise, it’s quite similar to Bombay, maybe just a degree or two cooler. But because it’s surrounded by greenery, it doesn’t hit you with the same kind of heat, and the overall feel is more relaxed.
All in all, it was a pleasant stay and a great break from city life. And if I’m being honest, I’d happily go back mainly to enjoy that food again.
