Bazball is the ultra-aggressive style of Test cricket associated with England’s men’s team under coach Brendon “Baz” McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, built on attacking with both bat and ball and trying to force a result rather than play for a draw since 2022.
Gamball is an aggressive style of Test cricket tied to the Indian men's team under coach Gautam "Gam"Bhir and various captains. It focuses on attacking with bat, ball, and words to push for a favorable result against opponents.
Outcomes
Since adopting Bazball in mid‑2022, England’s Test run rate has risen from roughly 3.2 runs per over historically to around 4.6–4.8, an increase of about 50% and the fastest sustained scoring rate in Test history. This has produced some spectacular fourth-innings chases and series wins, but also heavy defeats against top sides like India and Australia, leading to debate over whether Bazball is revolutionary or too risky at the highest level.
Gamball was recently fine-tuned, resulting in losses in several tests, a win against the West Indies, and a drawn series with the Bazball team. We clinched the Champions League trophy, but that iteration was more about Rohitball than Gamball.
Characteristics
Bazball: Aggressive cricket style focused on taking wickets rather than restricting runs, preferring to risk defeat rather than playing it safe. Bazball is also about high strike rates and focusing on results.
Gamball: Involves preparing Indian pitches that challenge our batsmen with spin and support our spinners in practicing against the opposition.
The initial approaches were for test cricket only, but it looks likely to have been inspired by the T20 culture.
What does the future look like? Fewer tests and even fewer test-playing days. Separate teams for test matches who play for the country and not with an eye on the IPL recruitment.
