A Dystopian World, Ahead? AI in the Enterprise: Monitoring Work and Productivity

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly integrated itself into the core of many businesses, particularly large enterprises. Much like the consolidation of power in the advertising industry, only a few major players dominate the AI ecosystem: Google, OpenAI, Meta (formerly Facebook), and Anthropic (with their AI model, Claude). These companies have invested heavily in AI and are now packaging their technology for other businesses to build upon. As AI advances, it is becoming clear that enterprises, rather than individual consumers, are driving the adoption of these technologies due to their significant cost and infrastructural requirements.

This raises an essential question: What does AI adoption mean for the workforce, particularly for employees wary of being monitored or evaluated by machines? Recent developments suggest that AI is already being used to monitor productivity in some workplaces, and the implications are potentially dystopian.

The AI Monitoring Workplace

One striking example of AI’s impact on work comes from a video that recently went viral. The video depicts AI surveillance in a coffee shop. The system tracked employee productivity, specifically the number of coffee cups each worker made during their shift. One employee made 20 cups of coffee, while another made only four. The AI system logged this disparity, giving management a clear view of who was working efficiently and who was lagging behind.

This kind of surveillance brings forth ethical concerns. Should AI be allowed to monitor employee productivity so closely? Is this technology a neutral tool or an invasion of privacy? It’s worth noting that AI monitoring systems don’t inherently display bias. Unlike human supervisors who might show favouritism or prejudice, AI has the potential to offer impartial assessments of productivity. For an honest worker, AI monitoring shouldn’t pose a threat. However, AI’s objective eye might cause worry for those who may slack off. AI’s neutrality in measurement raises another question: does it allow for the nuances of human behaviour? Workers aren’t machines — they have bad days, personal challenges, and health issues that can impact their productivity. If a human manager can offer understanding in these situations, will AI systems be so forgiving? This potential for depersonalisation is where the risks of a dystopian workplace start to emerge.

Impartiality vs. Humanity: Where AI Falls Short

While AI systems excel at tracking data, they lack the empathy and judgment that human managers possess. A person falling behind on their work could be going through personal difficulties, illness, or other struggles. If AI is the sole arbiter of productivity, those employees may be unfairly penalised for reasons beyond their control. This is where human intervention becomes crucial. The role of managers and human resources (HR) departments is more critical than ever in an AI-driven workplace. AI can offer valuable insights, but employee performance and job security decisions must always involve human discretion. In fact, Harvard Business Review highlights the importance of what is termed “augmented management” — where AI aids but does not replace human judgment.

In the coffee shop example, AI only shows part of the story: productivity in terms of coffee cups made. However, it does not capture the full picture of employee performance. Did the worker who made fewer cups spend time helping customers with complex orders, cleaning the work area, or handling a difficult transaction? These are factors that AI cannot yet measure effectively. AI data risks providing a narrow, incomplete view of performance without human oversight.

Surveillance and the Future of Privacy in the Workplace

AI’s ability to monitor employee productivity in real-time is unsettling for many, raising concerns about privacy and workplace autonomy. The trend of increasing surveillance extends beyond coffee shops. Amazon’s AI-driven monitoring of warehouse workers, for example, tracks every movement and calculates performance quotas that can lead to firings based on AI-generated metrics.

This form of AI surveillance has led to what some call the “panopticon workplace,” where employees feel like they are constantly being watched and that any deviation from perfect productivity might cost them their jobs. The philosopher Jeremy Bentham conceived the panopticon as a prison design in which inmates would never know if they were being watched, causing them to regulate their behaviour. Similarly, AI in the workplace exerts psychological pressure on employees, potentially eroding their sense of freedom and creativity.

AI as a Tool, Not a Solution

It is crucial to remember that AI is not inherently good or bad; it is a tool that should be used with care. Enterprises must balance AI’s efficiency and humanity, which must remain at the heart of any organisation. AI can help businesses track and improve productivity, but the final call on decisions, such as performance evaluations or job terminations, should still rest with people, not machines.

At the retail level, many workers and consumers may not yet feel the full impact of AI, but that is likely to change. As enterprises increasingly adopt AI tools, they filter into everyday operations. However, users need to understand that AI is primarily an analytics engine that makes recommendations — it does not make decisions. Responsibility still lies with the humans who use the data that AI provides.

As AI systems become more prevalent in businesses, the question of where we draw the line between efficiency and empathy becomes even more urgent. We must develop robust policies and ethical guidelines to ensure that AI enhances human work rather than undermines it. In the worst-case scenario, we could be heading toward a dystopian world where workers are little more than cogs in an AI-monitored machine.

The Road Ahead

The deeper, unspoken issue at play in the rise of AI is the shifting balance of power. As AI technologies become increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few dominant companies, the traditional role of governments in regulating the workforce, protecting privacy, and ensuring equitable treatment of citizens diminishes. These corporations, with their proprietary algorithms and immense control over AI infrastructures, have the potential to redefine the labour landscape, making governments less relevant in overseeing economic activities. This shift could lead to a future where the influence of individual citizens and public institutions is significantly diminished, as decisions about employment, privacy, and productivity are driven by corporate interests rather than democratic processes. The unchecked power of these companies threatens to erode the role of governments in safeguarding citizens’ rights, creating a world where the voices of the few dominate the many. As we continue down this path, it is imperative that we critically examine how AI is governed and ensure that this power does not undermine the core values of equality, fairness, and democratic accountability that are vital to a just society.

The future of AI in the enterprise may indeed be powerful, but it does not have to be dystopian — so long as we remember to keep people at the centre of the equation.
